Features of the microstructural and mechanical degradation of long term operated mild steel

Abstract: Purpose The purpose of this paper is to assess the technical state of old and repair steels of Shukhov’s tower elements after operation during ~ 110 and 70 years of the water tower in Nikolaev, basing on their mechanical tests, metallography and fractography investigations. Design/methodology/approach For their certification, the fractographic and structural features and mechanical properties (hardness, strength, plasticity and impact toughness) were analyzed. Both the steels under consideration were charact… Show more

“…We particularly used a convolutional neutral network (CNN), which displays high performance in terms of image analysis, even for deep learning. Although the input to the CNN was surface morphology converted to images, the output was an effective thickness as defined in Equation (1). Thus, analyses can be performed without removing necessary features through manual selection.…”

“…Maximum tensile load Width × Tensile strength of steel member with smooth surfaces (1) Thus, this study proposes a method that precisely estimates the effective thickness of the shell element from measurements of surface morphology. Although several methods have been proposed to obtain effective thickness from measurements of surface morphology [7,15,16], such thicknesses were estimated by manually selecting features such as the average thickness and standard deviation of thickness.…”

“…Amongst others, European studies have already looked into this subject related to fatigue pathologies of metallic assemblies, as shown for instance in Switzerland, 19 Sweden, 20 Portugal, 21 Italy, 22 Germany, 5 Poland, 23,24 and Ukraine. 25 In order to describe the fatigue behaviour of riveted connections, the classification of constructive details proposed in the Eurocode 3 can be applied. 26 This classification is made by considering the S-N or Wöhler curves of experimental fatigue data.…”

“…• comparison of theoretical factors with real factors -determination of factors that can cause limit states and degradation processes of TO, • evaluation of TO degradation -TO analysis using microscopy methods, destructive and NDT tests, • processing results, determining the causes of TO degradation, • conclusions to prevent the formation of degradation processes of TO, resp. reduction of TO degradation [8][9][10][11][12][13][14].…”
