Feeding Value and Nutrient Preservation of High Moisture Corn Ensiled in Conventional Silos for Lactating Dairy Cows

Abstract: Sixty-one Holstein cows were used at varying stages of lactation to evaluate the feeding value of high moisture shelled corn ensiled in conventional silos. Control rations consisted of comparable amounts of conventional shelled corn dried in commercial drying facilities. Cows fed high moisture corn produced milk of higher fat content (3.09 versus 2.64%) and greater quantities of fat (.73 versus .64 kg) while they consumed less concentrate (9.28 versus 9.84 kg), resulting in the crude fiber content of the dry m… Show more

“…The higher moisture content of WMBI2 increased the effluent losses. The results agree with those of Orth et al (1962), Byers et al (1971) and Chandler et al (1975). In contrast, Poutiainen (1971) recorded DM losses of 7-B %.…”

“…Chandler et al (1974) A não diferença dos tratamentos sobre o teor de gordura do leite (3,77%) evidencia que a SGUM não deprime o mesmo, desde que a dieta esteja corretamente balanceada e a ingestão de fibra adequada. Como regra geral, níveis aceitáveis de gordura são observados quando a dieta contém 50% ou mais de forragem ou pelo menos 21% FDA e 28% FDN.…”

“…The nutritional value of HMEC or HMSC for lactating cows ( Chandler et al , 1975 ; Ferraretto et al , 2013 ), beef cattle ( Utley and McCormick, 1975 ; Stock et al , 1991 ), swine ( Engelke et al , 1984 ; Asche et al , 1986 ) and broilers ( Garlich, 1976 ; Cruz-Polycarpo et al , 2014 ) has been discussed in several reports. Those reports indicate that HMEC and HMSC are available to such livestock as energy feed.…”
