Femtocaching and device-to-device collaboration: A new architecture for wireless video distribution

Abstract: We present a new architecture to handle the ongoing explosive increase in the demand for video content in wireless networks. It is based on distributed caching of the content in femto-basestations with small or non-existing backhaul capacity but with considerable storage space, called helper nodes. We also consider using the mobile terminals themselves as caching helpers, which can distribute video through device-to-device communications. This approach allows an improvement in the video throughput without depl… Show more

“…However, interested readers may refer to [6]- [9] and references therein. In [10], authors treated small cell base-stations (SBS) as helpers and formulated the problem of which files to cache when each user has access to multiple helpers. Since the focus in [10] is to derive an optimal caching strategy, authors do not consider the dynamics of the connectivity and the network topology.…”

“…In [10], authors treated small cell base-stations (SBS) as helpers and formulated the problem of which files to cache when each user has access to multiple helpers. Since the focus in [10] is to derive an optimal caching strategy, authors do not consider the dynamics of the connectivity and the network topology. Moreover, most of the existing studies also ignore the fact that the cellular macro base-station (MBS) can also control the dynamics of information storage/retrieval in cache enabled networks.…”

“…The new architecture to achieve wireless D2D cache collaboration is proposed in [9] from the viewpoint of asymptotic scaling characteristics and video content popularity. In [10], considering the improvement of the area spectral efficiency of video transmission, Shanmugam et al present a small cells heterogeneous architectures. In addition, [11] studies and formulates a max-flow optimization problem to maximizes the content downloading flows in D2D communication underlaying cellular networks and obtains the content downloading performance upper bound.…”
