Fermentation Blues: Analyzing the Microbiota of Traditional Indigo Vat Dyeing in Hunan, China

Abstract: Chemical reducing agents included in modern indigo dyeing to initiate indigo reduction can be harmful to both human health and the environment. Given that traditional indigo dyeing involves natural fermentation in a dye vat using natural organic additives without the use of toxic chemicals and that changes in the microbiota during traditional indigo fermentation potently affect the onset of indigo reduction, elucidation of these microbial community transitions could help develop methods to control the initiati… Show more

“…There are two sources of natural indigo dye, namely precipitated indigo (extracted indigo) and composted plants that contain indigo. Precipitated indigo has been used as a source of indigo dye in India, China, Southeast Asia, and Japan (Okinawa Prefecture) ( Toyama et al, 1978 ; Li et al, 2019 , 2022 ; Lopes et al, 2021 ). Since the microorganisms in the seeds are not associated with the precipitated indigo for fermentation, spontaneous initiation of indigo reduction can be time consuming.…”

“…The business essentially involves the use of Vat dyes; these are anthraquinone and indigo-based dyes with carbonyl functional group 1 . Other countries known for the production or utilization of vat dyes include China and Pakistan 2 , 3 In actual fact textile industry play a key role in the economy of most countries 3 .…”
