Fermentation: Metabolism, Kinetic Models, and Bioprocessing

Abstract: Biochemical and metabolic interpretation of microbial growth is an important topic in bioreactor design. We intend to address valuable information about the relation of critical operation variables and the simulation of bioprocesses with unstructured and structured kinetic models. Process parameters such as nutrient supply, pH, dissolved oxygen, and metabolic end-products directly impact the physiology and metabolism of microorganisms. Changes in the membrane as well as cell viability are of interest since pro… Show more

“…Unstructured kinetic models describe microbial kinetics including the most fundamental parameters involving microbial growth processes such as biomass concentration, substrate consumption and the production of metabolic products. 19 A relatively simple unstructured kinetic Monod model ( =̂S/(K S + S)) 20 with modifications proposed by Sultana et al 21 was used. These modifications correspond to the changes in the environmental conditions with the following assumptions: (a) limitation of yeast growth by shortage of substrate; (b) inhibition of yeast growth by ethanol and substrate; (c) cell death or inactivation does exist.…”

“…A correlation between specific productivity and specific growth rate per process time is known as the production kinetics, and it can be computed in the same way for batch and fed-batch fermentation systems, as shown in the following formula [ 39 ]: where, is a cell concentration, is an initial cell concentration, is the final broth volume and are the initial broth volume at measuring time and initial time respectively. Understanding the growth and production dynamics of B. licheniformis strain ALP3 is the goal of this experiment.…”

“…From simple exponential growth to complicated mathematical expressions, the kinetic model has developed to predict heterogeneity in single cells, describe numerous processes, explain internal control systems, and even predict genetic diversity within bacterial populations. Thus, the design of operating conditions and operational design for optimum product production was made possible by this simulation model [ 38 , 39 ]. Through the bioreactor cultivation system, the ALP production capacity, rate of production, and specific productivity are all much more than those obtained using shake flask cultivation.…”

“…Development of fermentation models is aided by information from measurements taken during process operation . It is known that the complexity in a mathematical model may increase with the inclusion of environmental conditions such as multisubstrate consumption, pH change during fermentation, variable temperature, rheological changes in culture media, multiphasic environmental variability, and nonideality of mixing and stirring . In this study, the fermentation process kinetics was described with a modified Monod-type cell growth model that accounts for byproduct inhibition.…”
