Fermentation of hemicellulose liquor from Brewer's spent grain using Scheffersomyces stipitis and Pachysolen tannophilus for production of 2G ethanol and xylitol

Abstract: Beer production generates brewer's spent grain as a byproduct. This biomass contains lignin, cellulose, and hemicellulose, and can be used for the production of second‐generation (2G) ethanol and xylitol. For this to be economically viable, fermentable fractions must be used, allowing the conversion of cellulose and hemicellulose to ethanol. This study evaluated the fermentation of hemicellulose liquor from brewer's spent grain (HLBS) in aerobic and oxygen‐ limited conditions using Scheffersomyces stipitis and… Show more

“…Pretreatment of lignocellulosic biomass produces pigments, acid-soluble lignin, phenols and other compounds, which hinder the microbial as well as enzymatic activity. Therefore, pretreatment may or may not be accompanied by detoxification by activated charcoal, ion-exchange chromatography or sodium boro-hydride to remove these inhibitors in post-hydrolysis processing [36,84].…”

“…A D-xilulose é fosforilada por ação da enzima Xilulocinase a xilulose-5-fosfato (XK)(HAHN-HÄGERDAL et al, 2007) e incorporada a via das pentoses fosfato. A via da isomerase ocorre em bactérias a partir da conversão do açúcar L-arabinose em xilulose-5-fosfato(SILVA et al, 2020). Essa conversão ocorre em três etapas.…”
