Fermented barley extract supplementation ameliorates metabolic state in stroke-prone spontaneously hypertensive rats

Abstract: We studied the effects of fermented barley extract P (FBEP) in stroke-prone spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHRSP). Male 10-week-old SHRSP were divided into three groups that were fed: an AIN-93M diet (control), a low dose of FBEP (4 g/kg; FBEP1), and a high dose of FBEP (20 g/kg; FBEP2) for three weeks. Hypertension was significantly improved by the use of FBEP supplementation. The FBEP diet improved plasma triglyceride, insulin sensitivity, enhanced plasma catalase, and superoxide dismutase activities, and … Show more

“…30 Long-term broccoli sprout diet containing sulphoraphane precursor improved endothelial-dependent vasodilatation and decreased renal and vascular oxidative stress, as well as blood pressure in SHRSP. 31 In addition, 4 months of treatment with sulforaphane improved renal function and blood pressure in SHRSP.…”

“…Fermented food products facilitate the dissociation of Keap1 from Nrf2 (Zhao & Shah, 2016) (increase the phosphorylation of extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK) (S. B. Lin et al, 2018), and facilitate Nrf2 translocation to the nucleus (Ardiansyah et al, 2015;Bautista-Expósito et al, 2019;Khan et al, 2020). Consequently, there is an increase in the expressions of Nrf2-dependent phase II enzyme genes such as heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) (S. Kim et al, 2018;Park et al, 2020), catalase, glutathione peroxidase (GPx), superoxide dismutase (SOD), quinone oxidoreductase (NQO1) (Fuda et al, 2019).…”

“…Barley intake reduces the risk of total stroke by significantly increasing the medium and small particle sizes of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (see Table 3) [140]. Increasing the expression of antioxidant genes in the liver and the regulation of Nrf2 played a role in the regulation of metabolic diseases in stroke-prone spontaneously hypertensive rats consuming a fermented barley extract P diet [141].…”
