Fertilization rate in couples with unexplained infertility

Abstract: A group of 24 couples with unexplained infertility was scheduled for in-vitro fertilization and tubal embryo transfer between May 1989 and September 1990. In the same period, in-vitro fertilization and intrauterine transfer of embryos was planned in a control group of 44 women with tubal infertility. The mean age and duration of infertility were similar in both groups and the same scheme of ovarian stimulation was used. No statistically significant difference was obtained comparing oestradiol levels and number… Show more

“…Total fertilization failure or lower fertilization rates in unexplained infertility after IVF has been a concern (13)(14)(15)(16). Performing ICSI and IVF on sibling oocytes has been recommended to prevent total fertilization failure and diagnose the sperm fertilizing ability for the management of future cycles (17)(18)(19).…”

“…O n the basis of these clinical data, the results obtained with GIFT by Cefalu et al, (1988) could be explained by the chances of achieving fertilization being greater when multiple oocytes are exposed to spermatozoa (Mackenna et al, 1992b), and not necessarily because abnormal sperm transport is bypassed. This suggestion is supported by results obtained (32.6% pregnancy rate per cycle) using induction of multiple follicular development combined with IUI in couples with unexplained infertility (Chaflkin et al, 1991).…”

“…In-vitro fertilization (IVF) rates in stimulated cycles are significantly lower in couples with unexplained infertility in comparison with patients having tuba1 problems, although semen parameters are within the normal range in both groups (Mackenna et al, 1992b). Similar results have also been obtained in couples undergoing IVF in a natural cycle (Mackenna et al, 1992c), suggesting that the lack of fertilization in couples with unexplained infertility is due to intrinsic gamete defects and not necessarily to abnormalities in the follicular phase of the menstrual cycle.…”
