Fetal Behavior and Heart Rate in Twin Pregnancy: A Review

Abstract: Fetal movements and fetal heart rate (FHR) are well-established markers of fetal well-being and maturation of the fetal central nervous system. The purpose of this paper is to review and discuss the available knowledge on fetal movements and heart rate patterns in twin pregnancies. There is some evidence for an association or similarity in fetal movement incidences or FHR patterns between both members of twin pairs. However, the temporal occurrence of these patterns seems to be for the most part asynchronous, … Show more

“…Developmental science has most often relied on studies comparing fraternal and identical twins to parse the genetic contribution to behavior. Although there are a few studies of fetal behavior in twins, most consider chorionicity over zygosity (Gallagher, Costigan, & Johnson, 1992; Tendais, Visser, Figueiredo, Montenegro, & Mulder, 2013). Moreover, twinning is an anomalous condition of human pregnancy and it cannot be presumed that the intrauterine milieu for both fetuses is the same.…”

“…Abnormal heart rate patterns are suggestive of foetal distress (13). Although it is well recognised that FHR decreases during the course of pregnancy in farm animals (3,11,(14)(15)(16) except in goats (16), there are no data available on the FHR curve through singleton and multiple pregnancies in domestic animals.…”

“…The longitudinal assessment of fetal movements is a major strength of this study. However, several limitations need to be recognized, namely the relatively small sample size, but still larger than in most other studies (Tendais, Visser, Figueiredo, Montenegro, & Mulder, ). Other limitations include lack of simultaneous observation of both twins’ fetal movements in a third of the recordings, the inability to control for possible confounders like diurnal rhythms and prandial effects.…”
