“…In an initially published series the overall survival rates were 24-56% [68,73,76,77]. In recently published studies an increase in perinatal survival up to 92% has been reported [56,57,69,70,72,78], Mortality rates in hydrop ic infants range between 25 and 66% [43,57,72,73], The incidence of traumatic death as the major source of mor tality, has decreased since the use of real time ultrasound guidance.…”

“…From many reports (7,11) it is obvious that the results are better in the last half of the investigational period and several point out that the accumulating experience of a small team brings improving results. Bowman et al (7) improved the survival rate from 28 % in the first part of the transfusion period to 62% in the last part. Our results confirm this tendency with a survival rate of 72% in the last 3 years of the investigational period.…”

“…The advisability of performing an intra-uterine transfusion when the fetus appears to be hydropic has been questioned (2, 12, 18). Some authors (7,14), however, report survival rates among hydropic fetuses (prenatal radiological diagnosis) of up to 30 %. However, the diagnosis of fetal hydrops in early gestation is difficult (13) and has to be related to other criteria for selection.…”
