Fiber composition of the rat sciatic nerve

Abstract: The rat sciatic nerve originates from the spinal segments L4-L6. It is unifascicular at the trochanter; 5-7 mm distally, the nerve splits into two and then into four fascicles. The tibial portion gives rise to the tibial and the sural nerves, and the peroneal portion gives rise to the peroneal nerve and a cutaneous branch that perforates the lateral hamstring muscles to innervate the proximolateral face of the calf. The number and type of the axons in these branches were determined in light and electron microg… Show more

“…The unmyelinated axons in rhGDNF-treated animals were larger, not smaller, than their counterparts in vehicle-treated animals. These results are comparable with those in previous studies on the fiber composition of the rat sciatic nerve (Schmalbruch, 1986).…”

“…Later, it was described that the proximal portion of this nerve is constituted by a single fascicle (Schmalbruch, 1986), as we have also shown in the present study.…”

“…According to histochemical tests reactivity, the levator labii superioris muscle is consisted of a mosaic distribution different from the results found by Schmalbruch (1986), in which the values were between 0.42 mm and 7.65 mm in the tibial and femoral nerve in the rat. This observation is probably related with the frequency of the different fiber types in the levator labii superioris muscle, that has a predominance of white fibers, that is fast twitch fibers (Table IV).…”
