Fiber-optic biosensors – an overview

Abstract: This article reviews progress and developments during the past five years in the field of optical fiber biosensors. Because of the expense and time constraints associated with modern laboratory analysis, there is a growing need for real-time, low-cost technology that can be used industrially, environmentally, and clinically, and to monitor food processing. Miniaturization, integrated systems, and multianalyte determination have become key aspects of sensor development and efforts in this direction will also be… Show more

“…In the last years, a lot of legislative actions for environmental pollution control have been grown due the social concern in this area ( on the basis of the transducing element, they can be named as electrochemical, optical, piezoelectric or thermal sensors; according to the bio recognition principle, biosensors are classified into antibodies and antigens, enzymatic, non-enzymatic, whole-cell and nucleic acids biosensors (Marazuela & Moreno-Bondi, 2002;Rodriguez-Mozaz et al, 2006).…”

“…Thus, probe will hybridize with target gene followed by generation of optical signals (Marazuela and Moreno, 2002). There are several types of Nucleic acid (DNA/RNA) interaction detection systems available which are used for detection of several viruses or other disease associated agents (Table 4; Figure 4).…”
