Abstract:Cardiac papillary fibroelastoma is a primary cardiac neoplasm with an unknown prevalence but is increasingly detected by echocardiography.A 70-year-old asymptomatic man (98 kg; 178 cm) was referred in 2014 to our hospital for evaluation of two suspected cardiac tumors in the left ventricle after his first open heart surgery for fibroelastoma via conservative sternotomy in year 2005. Echocardiogram of first reported fibroelastoma recurrence distant to previous resection.
Central MessageCardiac papillary fibroelastoma recurrence is exceedingly rare but has been reported at previous resection locations. We present the first reported recurrence of distant from past surgical sites.
Cardiac papillary fibroelastomas can be multicentric, with both local and distant recurrence, warranting better insight into their bioepidemiologic profile and improved resection techniques.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
