Fibrous and composite materials for blast protection of structural elements—A state-of-the-art review

Abstract: Contemporary world is facing numerous bomb explosion attacks on public and civil buildings causing huge loss of property and human lives. As a consequence, the society needs more safety and protection for the existing structures against blast loads. Among the various strategies, one effective way to enhance the blast resistance of reinforced concrete and masonry structures is through retrofitting using various types and forms of fibrous and composite materials. This work presents an up to date review of availa… Show more

“…Composites are introduced into structural elements to improve their flexural resistance, shear strength, confinement, bending property, etc. [1]. Nowadays, research is being carried out to use composite materials in structural elements to improve their resistance against earthquake, blast or impact loads caused by explosions [5].…”

“…Due to the relatively high vulnerability of glass windows and facades, one of the recent applications of textiles in existing structures can take the form of special curtains, aimed at protecting the occupants in the case of extreme loads, such as impacts and explosions ( Figure 14 and [85]), but also fire [86].
