Field-Based Distribution and Bioaccumulation Factors for Cyclic and Aliphatic Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFASs) in an Urban Sedentary Waterbird Population

Abstract: The field-based distribution and bioaccumulation factor (BAF) for per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) were determined in residential Black Swans (Cygnus atratus) from an urban lake (Melbourne, Australia). The concentrations of 46 aliphatic and cyclic PFASs were determined by HPLC-MS/MS in serum and excrement from swans, and water, sediment, aquatic macrophytes, soil, and grass samples in and around the lake. Elevated concentrations of ∑46PFASs were detected in serum (120 ng mL–1) and excrement (110 ng … Show more

“…The highest concentration was observed in the activated carbon filter tank, 110 ng/L. Thus far, WWTPs and landfill leachate were documented as environmental sources of PFECHS, , but our work additionally remarked that PFECHS was widely detected in the fluorochemical manufactory with levels comparable to or higher than the contaminated sites, suggesting that the ECF process is accompanied by the formation of PFECHS, which is corroborated by 3 M corporation…”

“…68 3 M corporation phased out the production of PFECHS in 2002, as a part of an initiative to phase out PFOS and its analogues. 69 In the mass spectrum of sample analysis, a distinct peak shape with a DF of 100% in the dust was observed. The concentration range was between 1.74 and 123 ng/g, with a mean concentration of 34.1 ng/g.…”

“…PFOS has been manufactured and used widely in many industrial and household applications since the 1950s . Due to the long-range transmission, chemical stability, and nonbiodegradability, PFOS shows high bioaccumulation in biological tissues as well as obvious biomagnification in food webs. , In May 2009, PFOS was designated as one of the target chemicals for regulation by the Stockholm Convention on POPs. , A series of studies have been made to investigate the uptake, distribution, accumulation, and toxicity of PFOS in various organisms, such as zebrafish (Danio rerio), Daphnia magna, Brachionus calyciflorus, etc. However, these studies were based on whole organism/organs for acquisition of an average result and cannot accurately reflect the accumulation behavior and distribution characteristics of PFOS at the cellular level.…”
