Field Implementation of a Monthly Multi-Modal Prophylactic Strategy (Dinotefuran-Permethrin-Pyriproxyfen and Milbemycine Oxime-Praziquantel) Against Canine Vector-Borne Diseases in Corsica

Abstract: With a mild Mediterranean-type climate, Corsica is endemic for canine vector-borne diseases (CVBDs) such as dirofilariosis (a mosquitoes borne-diseases: MBDs), leishmaniosis and ehrlichiosis. The aim of this present study was to evaluate a monthly multi-modal prophylactic strategy (MMP) against CVBDs occurring in Corsica. The study was conducted as a comparative field trial in which eighty dogs allocated into two groups were included: (i) Group 1 consisted of 25 dogs under the MMP [per-os administratio… Show more

“…Dirofilaria transmission is related to an episystem complex involving several factors such as temperature, vector, host abundance, and the pathogen itself [ 9 ], which complicates disease control [ 49 ]. The European Society for Dirofilariosis and Angiostrongylosis (ESDA), the European Scientific Counsel Companion Animal Parasites (ESCCAP) and the American Heartworm Society (AHS) recommend strengthening preventive strategies through the combined use of anti- Dirofilaria larvae (macrocyclic lactone products) with vector prevention products (repellents) [ 50 , 51 ], as already demonstrated in field studies [ 52 ].…”
