Field Validation of DNDC Model for Methane and Nitrous Oxide Emissions from Rice-based Production Systems of India

Abstract: The DNDC (DeNitrification and DeComposition) model was tested against experimental data on CH 4 and N 2 O emissions from rice fields at different geographical locations in India. There was a good agreement between the simulated and observed values of CH 4 and N 2 O emissions. The difference between observed and simulated CH 4 emissions in all sites ranged from À11.6 to 62.5 kg C ha À1 season À1 . Most discrepancies between simulated and observed seasonal fluxes were less than 20% of the field estimate of the s… Show more

“…7). As initial SOC increased from 0.5 % to 2 %, N 2 O emission increased from 3.11 kg N ha −1 yr −1 to 4.43 kg N ha −1 yr −1 , which is identical to the result of Jagadeesh Babu et al (2006), and the range of change covered the range of N 2 O flux change caused by the change of other soil factors. Within the DNDC model, dissolved organic carbon (DOC) is the only energy source for the entire denitrification process.…”

“…[10] The model DNDC was selected because it has been calibrated and validated for many sites around the world [Brown et al, 2002;Butterbach-Bahl et al, 2001;Cai et al, 2003;Grant et al, 2004;Jagadeesh Babu et al, 2006;Kesik et al, 2005;Kiese et al, 2005;Pathak et al, 2005;Saggar et al, 2004;Xu-Ri et al, 2003;Zhang et al, 2006] and can simulate drained organic soils. Version 9.1 of DNDC was used.…”

“…Amongst process-oriented models, DNDC is one of the most well-established and has been widely validated (Wang et al, 1997, Butterbach-Bahl et al, 2001, Smith et al, 2002, Brown et al, 2002, Cai et al, 2003, Butterbach-Bahl et al, 2004, Grant et al, 2004, Babu et al, 2006, Beheydt et al, 2007, Abdalla et al, 2009 (Cai et al, 2003, Babu et al, 2006, Tonitto et al, 2007, Beheydt et al, 2007.…”
