Filling gaps in flower fly distributions: first record of Aneriophora aureorufa (Philippi, 1865) (Diptera, Syrphidae) from Argentina

Abstract: The genus Aneriophora Stuardo & Cortés 1952, previously considered endemic to Chile, is recorded for the first time from Argentina.  Specimens of Aneriophora aureorufa (Philippi, 1865) were collected in Neuquén Province and deposited in the entomological collection of the Instituto Argentino de Zonas Áridas, Mendoza, Argentina. A diagnosis, distribution map, and photographs of A. aureorufa are provided.

“…In consequence and given that only one Neotropical species has been assessed in the IUCN Red List (Alaniz et al 2018, López-García et al 2019, there are compelling reasons to propose the new species as well as Talahua fervida as flagship entities for the conservation of the areas where they occur, been critical as environmental quality bioindicators. We considered that the information provided will constitute a baseline to assess their conservation status following the guidelines of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).…”

“…Aneriophora Stuardo & Cortés, 1952 is a monotypic genus (Eristalinae: Milesiini) that includes a charismatic species, Aneriophora aureorufa (Philippi, 1865). A. aureorufa is distributed from central (Maule) to southern Chile (Aysén Region) (Alaniz et al 2018;Etcheverry, 1963;Thompson, 1972) but is also present on the south-central east border of Argentina (López-García et al 2019).…”
