Films Fabricated with Native and Ball‐Milled Modified Glutinous Rice Starch: Physicochemical and Mucoadhesive Properties

Abstract: This study aims to investigate the physicochemical and mucoadhesive properties of films made of glutinous rice starch (GRS), native (NGRS), and ball‐milled modified GRS (MGRS), in comparison with the reference mucoadhesive polymers. By using the solvent casting technique with glycerol (30% w/w of starch mass) as a plasticizer, all GRS films exhibit satisfactory and comparable thickness and weight uniformity, surface pH, and moisture content. ATR‐FTIR indicates that the hydrogen bonds are formed between GRS and… Show more

“…The FTIR spectrum of PCP and HPMC K15 physical mixture (2:1 ratio) revealed distinct bands comparable to those of PCP [ 18 ]. The FTIR spectrum of glycerol is recorded to be of O-H stretching (3282 cm −1 ), aliphatic C-H stretching (2931 and 2880 cm −1 ), and H-O-H bending (1640 cm −1 ) [ 36 ]. The ATR-FTIR spectrum of placebo gels, irrespective of the mucoadhesive polymers, displayed strong absorption bands at 3315 cm −1 (O-H stretching) and a band at 1637 cm −1 (H-O-H bending).…”

“…To determine the mucoadhesive properties of C. comosa gels, TA.XT.Plus Texture Analyzer (Stable Micro Systems, Godalming, Surrey GU7 1YL, UK) coupled with a 50 N load cell was utilized ( Figure S2 ) [ 18 , 36 ]. The C. comosa gels and the porcine vaginal mucosa were incubated at 25 ± 1 °C.…”

“…CH 2 bending and CH 3 symmetrical deformations were confirmed by bands at 1418 and 1378 cm −1 , respectively [67]. The band at 1152 cm −1 is assigned to the asymmetric stretching of the C-O-C in glycosidic linkage, while C-O stretching for primary alcohol was observed at 1065 and 1028 cm −1 [62]. The band at 896 cm −1 belongs to CH out-of-plane bending vibration in the monosaccharide ring [67].…”

“…Additionally, the spectrum displayed characteristic peaks of the GRS, including a broad band at 3327 cm −1 attributed to the stretching vibration of hydrogen-bonded hydroxyl groups (O-H) [61]. Another distinctive peak at 1640 cm −1 was assigned to the O-H stretching of hydroxyl groups [62]. The spectrum also exhibited noticeable absorbances at 1152, 1103, 1080, and 1021 cm −1 , which can be attributed to C-O and C-C stretching with some contribution from C-OH [63].…”
