Final Height after Growth Hormone Therapy in Peripubertal Boys with a Subnormal Integrated Concentration of Growth Hormone

Abstract: The aim of this study was to test the effect of growth hormone (GH) therapy on final height in peripubertal boys with idiopathic short stature in whom a subnormal integrated concentration of GH ( < 3.2 µg/l) was found. Twenty-eight peripubertal children were studied. Height was below 2 SD for age, growth velocity was < 4.5 cm/year, bone age was more than 2 SD below mean for age and GH response to provocative tests was more than 10 µg/l. Eleven subjects (group B) were treated with recombinant GH 0.75 unit/kg/we… Show more

“…These findings suggest that the average result of 6 or more years daily rhGH injections is about 0.4 SD, which is 2.4 cm. These results are not necessarily in conflict with the results of a study (Zadik et al, 1992b) showing a positive effect of GH on final height in 17 peripubertal boys with ISS and a subnormal integrated concentration of GH, as in our study also children with a low integrated concentration of GH did better than the others. Our data are in line with those of a recent collaborative study on children with variable endogenous GH secretion (Guyda, 1994).…”

“…The Zadik non-randomised study, 53 which considered boys with subnormal IC-GH, found a significantly greater final height in the GHtreated group compared with untreated controls: 164.5 ± 3.9 cm versus 157.6 ± 4.5 cm, respectively (p < 0.04). The Hindmarsh and Brook study 54 found an average height increase in GH-treated children of 2.8 cm in boys and 2.5 cm in girls.…”
