Finding Alternative to River Sand in Building Construction

Abstract: Due to the increasing expansion of infrastructure, there is a very high worldwide demand for river sand in the modern era. India's annual demand for river sand is 60 million metric tons. In metropolitan cities, the need for river sand is about 1 kilogram per person per day. The rapid extraction of river sand is producing detrimental effects on the environment. The main objective of the research is to determine the impact of rapid sand mining on river bank erosion and accretion and to find substitute materials … Show more

“…Its bulk density, measuring 1740 kg/m 3 , signifies a compact and dense composition, providing essential support in construction. Moreover, a specific gravity of 2.8 indicates its relative density compared to water [36]. These combined physical characteristics make RS a good choice for use in mortar, as shown in Table 2.…”

“…Employing waste materials and industrial by-products has emerged as a critical approach to mitigate the environmental effects of concrete production [34,35]. Moreover, technological progress is evident in the surface modification of recycled aggregates, like waste glass, which is proven to improve concrete performance substantially [36]. The existing body of research is well aligned with the SDGs, particularly those related to sustainable urban development, responsible resource usage, and climate mitigation efforts.…”

“…Because of its low cost, large flow, safety and storage, and the flood control efficiency of many existing dams, it is the best solution 7),8) . The energy dissipation issues downstream of the dam need to pay more attention when the flow volume increases, especially paying attention to the energy dissipation, stabilize the riverbank, and protection against scour 10) .
