Fine‐grained bed sediment storage within the main channel systems of the Frome and Piddle catchments, Dorset, UK

Abstract: Abstract:Lowland permeable catchments in the UK are particularly prone to sedimentation problems, on account of the increased fine sediment loadings generated by recent land-use change and their stable seasonal hydrological regimes, which are frequently depleted by groundwater abstraction. Fine-grained sediment storage on the bed of the main channel systems of the Frome (437 km 2 ) and Piddle (183 km 2 ) catchments, Dorset, UK, has been examined at 29 sites using a sediment remobilization technique. Measuremen… Show more

The contribution of stored sediment to the sediment budget in the Ehen is thus rather limited compared to other rivers in the UK.…”

“…Consequently, understanding patterns of in-channel sediment storage is critical for elucidating the sediment dynamics of a river, whether focused on the reach (e.g. Smith et al 2003;Collins and Walling 2007a) or network (e.g. Walling et al 1998;Wilson et al 2004) scale.…”

“…Agricultural phosphorus inputs to rivers were estimated using the PSYCHIC (Phosphorus and Sediment Yield CHaracterization In Catchments) model (Collins et al, 2007;Davison et al, 2008;Stromqvist et al, 2008). The PSYCHIC model is a monthly time-step model with explicit representation of surface and drain flow hydrological pathways, particulate and solute mobilisation, and incidental losses associated with fertiliser and manure spreading.…”
