Abstract. While the homogenization of snow elastic properties has been widely reported in the literature, homogeneous rate-dependent behavior responsible for the densification of the snowpack has hardly ever been upscaled from snow microstructure. We therefore adapt homogenization techniques developed within the framework of elasticity to the study of snow viscoplastic behavior. Based on the definition of kinematically uniform boundary conditions, homogenization problems are applied to 3-D images obtained from X-ray tomography, and the mechanical response of snow samples is explored for several densities. We propose an original postprocessing approach in terms of viscous dissipated powers in order to formulate snow macroscopic behavior. Then, we show that Abouaf models are able to capture snow viscoplastic behavior and we formulate a homogenized constitutive equation based on a density parametrization. Eventually, we demonstrate the ability of the proposed models to account for the macroscopic mechanical response of snow for classical laboratory tests.

Based on various deformation mechanisms occurring during solid state sintering (pressureless and pressure assisted), a multitude of sintering models have been developed and presented in literature. As reported in literature, most of the simulation results line up well with experimental data. Unfortunately, none of them can be used arbitrarily and none of them are applicable to a generalized case. This paper focuses on a comparative study of three commonly applied models. The first model is based on a physical approach (Riedel) and the other two are phenomenologically based models (the modified SkorohodOlevsky Viscous Sintering (SOVS) model and a modified Abouaf model). The material models have been implemented through FORTRAN Subroutines used for the FE-Software ABAQUS. The simulation results demonstrate their advantages and disadvantages based on sintering simulations of an aluminum oxide based ceramic cylinder and a bilayer laminate. A guideline to select a suitable model and the adjustment of input parameters under different sintering conditions for general usage is also discussed.

This paper presents numerical simulation of powder sintering. The numerical model introduced in this work employs the discrete element method which assumes that material can be modelled by a large assembly of discrete elements (particles) of spherical shape interacting among one another. Modelling of sintering requires introduction of the cohesive interaction among particles representing interparticle sintering forces. Numerical studies of sintering have been combined with experimental studies which provided data for calibration and validation of the model. In the laboratory tests evolution of microstructure and density during sintering have been studied. Comparison of numerical and experimental results shows a good performance of the numerical model developed.
