First beams from the new electron cyclotron resonance source LEGIS (LEGnaro ecrIS) at INFN-LNL

Abstract: From April 2008 the PIAVE injector for the ALPI booster was involved in the upgrade of the high voltage platform housing an electron cyclotron resonance (ECR) source. A 14.5 GHz SUPERNANOGAN type ECR replaced the existing source ALICE; at the same time, the whole platform beam line was redesigned and beam shaping and diagnostic system were installed. The source and the platform were ready to be put into operation in January 2009. PIAVE's commissioning was started from late March and completed in May 2009 using… Show more

“…Highly charged ions are produced by a 2 nd generation Electron Cyclotron Resonance Ion Source (ECRIS [3]) called LEGIS (LEGnaro ecrIS [4]), installed on a 400 kV high voltage platform. In this ion source, a plasma is created by microwave in the GHz range and confined by a particular magnetic structure (the B-minimum structure), thus allowing the production of high charge states.…”

“…Fig. 4(a) shows t 1/2 of 7 Be ions injected into an an ECRIS operating at 14.428 GHz, 100 W and filled with O-gas at 5×10 −5 mbar pressure [20]. The map is purely representational in nature and highly sensitive to the initial distribution of 7 Be 0+ macroparticles -the true distribution will result in significantly higher gradients in decay rates in the plasma trap.…”

“…The geometry used to validate numerically the modification proposed in this paper is the plasma chamber of the ECRIS called LEGIS (LEGnaro ecrIS [7]) and installed at Istituto Nazionale di Fisica Nucleare-Laboratori Nazionali di Legnaro (INFN-LNL). It is a full permanent magnet source of the Supernanogan type built by the Pantechnik company, whose typical operating frequency is 14.428 GHz.…”
