First Case of Lung Abscess due toSalmonella entericaSerovar Abony in an Immunocompetent Adult Patient

Abstract: In healthy individuals, nontyphoidal Salmonella species predominantly cause a self-limited form of gastroenteritis, while they infrequently invade or cause fatal disease. Extraintestinal manifestations of nontyphoidal Salmonella infections are not common and mainly occur among individuals with specific risk factors; among them, focal lung infection is a rare complication caused by nontyphoidal Salmonella strains typically occurring in immunocompromised patients with prior lung disease. We describe the first ca… Show more

“…Several human salmonellosis cases have been associated to contact to reptiles [ 22 , 23 , 24 ]. In humans, non-typhoidal Salmonella may induce enteric forms characterized by fever, vomiting, and diarrhea [ 25 ], but also extraintestinal forms [ 26 , 27 , 28 , 29 ] depending on the serovar involved. Differently, Salmonella seems to be adapted to reptiles, causing prevalently asymptomatic infections [ 30 ], while disease and death occasionally occur [ 31 ].…”

“…Systemic factors include HIV, malaria, diabetes mellitus, uremia, impaired cell-mediated immunity, impaired B-cell function, prior use of antibiotics, diminished gastric acidity, and low socioeconomic status. Local factors include prior lung or pleural disease and congenital abnormalities [8] , [9] , [10] . Our patient had multiple comorbidities including end stage renal disease (ESRD) requiring hemodialysis.…”

“…The presence of septic thrombophlebitis makes impossible exclusion of septic PE. An embolism with infected thrombi is an additional risk factor for abcess formation in the infarction zone, which is observed in 44% of these patients [15] .…”
