First experiment with the NUSTAR/FAIR Decay Total Absorption γ-Ray Spectrometer (DTAS) at the IGISOL IV facility

Abstract: The new Decay Total Absorption Spectrometer (DTAS) has been commissioned with low energy radioactive beams at the upgraded IGISOL IV facility. The DTAS is a segmented detector composed of up to 18 NaI(Tl) crystals and it will be a key instrument in the DESPEC experiment at FAIR. In this document we report on the experimental setup and the first measurements performed with DTAS at IGISOL. The detector was characterized by means of MC simulations, and this allowed us to calculate the response function of the spe… Show more

“…It is a remarkably large γ/neutron branching (18%) for a nucleus which has eight neutrons more than the last stable Rb isotope. In the case of 137 I the preliminary value of P γ is 6.6% somewhat smaller that the value we reported in [8] but still very large compared to P n = 7.8%.…”

“…Neutrons interact by inelastic scattering and capture producing background γ-rays. The second measurement was performed with DTAS, a modular 18 NaI(Tl) crystal spectrometer developed for measurements at the future FAIR/NUSTAR facility [8]. The geometry, based on rectangular crystals, is easily reconfigurable.…”

“…2 the grey horizontal bar indicates the region of the distortion observed by reactor antineutrino experiments with respect to converted spectra, which coincides with the region dominated by the contribution of 92 Rb. In 2014, a second experimental campaign was carried out at the Jyväskylä facility, using for the first time the DTAS detector, made of 18 NaI crystals developed by the IFIC of Valencia (Spain) [28], coupled for the first time to the new IGISOL-4 facility. The experiment provided also the opportunity of to use for the first time the precision Penning trap with IGISOL-4.…”

“…Finally, in our setup we also placed a HPGe detector behind the β detector in order to check for possible contaminants. In these measurements, we used the new Decay Total Absorption γ -ray Spectrometer (DTAS) [16], that was commissioned with radioactive beams in this experiment [17]. This is a 18-fold segmented NaI(Tl) spectrometer with rectangular crystals of 150 mm × 150 mm × 250 mm that has been designed and constructed for the DEcay SPEctroscopy (DESPEC) [18] experiment at FAIR.…”
