First international consensus conference on standardization of oncoplastic breast conserving surgery

Abstract: When implemented into clinical practice, the panel recommendations may improve safety and effectiveness of OPS. The attendees agreed that there is a need for prospective multicenter studies to optimize patient selection and for standardized criteria to qualify and accredit OPS training centers.

“…Recently, attempts at standardization have been proposed, but terminology and algorithms for decision‐making are complex and the success of this approach is yet to be determined. Agreement regarding the need for standardized outcome assessment, including standard definitions of complications and quality‐of‐life assessments using validated patient‐reported outcome measures, however, must be a priority if future research in oncoplastic surgery is to be meaningful. The recently developed core outcome set for reconstructive breast surgery is one way by which this may be achieved.…”

“…The OPBC is committed to bringing safe and effective oncoplastic breast surgery to routine patient care, namely oncoplastic breast-conserving surgery (OPS), as well as NSM and skin-sparing mastectomy (SSM) with immediate reconstruction [ 12 ]. After the first consensus conference on standardization of OPS in German-speaking countries in 2017, the need was recognized for an independent non-profit organization to develop recommendations that are applicable globally [ 13 ].…”

“…Numerous proposals have expanded the OPS range of techniques in the literature [ 27 39 ], but it is important to highlight the factors that guide them to success: The surgeon must be trained under the OPS theoretical–practical model [ 40 ] to understand the importance of breast anatomy and pedicles used by plastic surgery, breast segments proposed by Acea [ 22 ] and according to the complexity levels (I–II) proposed by Clough for a proper technique selection that suits the patient and the glandular density of the breast [ 13 , 41 , 42 ]. The patient must understand the benefits, risks and alternatives of OPS so that they may provide informed consent [ 43 ].…”
