First isolation and molecular characterization of Suid herpesvirus type 1 from a domestic dog in Argentina

Abstract: Since Aujeszky`s disease (pseudorabies), which is caused by Suid herpesvirus type 1 (SuHV-1), was first notified in Argentina in 1978, many SuHV-1 strains have been isolated from swine. However, this disease can affect other vertebrates, such as dogs (secondary hosts), and lead to fatal neurological disease. The objective of the current work is to report the first isolation and molecular characterization of SuHV-1 from a dead domestic dog from Santa Fe Province (Argentina), which had had nervous signs compatib… Show more

“…This strongly suggests that PRV can exist in the wild boar population even if the domestic pig population in a prefecture is free from AD. Wild boars would thus represent a reservoir for PRV and risk factors for the transmission of PRV to domestic pigs [ 6 , 21 , 30 ] and other animals including hunting dogs [ 5 , 17 , 20 , 21 , 22 , 23 , 25 , 26 ]. The PRV isolates identified in this study were clustered into “genotype II,” based on the nucleotide sequence of the gC gene (gC-genotype II) [ 20 , 33 , 34 ].…”

“…While the noti cation of infection in domestic pigs decreases in some regions of the world, PrV reported in dogs from different parts of the world is increasing [9,10,13,15,16,24]. The genomic characterization of PrV from secondary host as obtained in this study will help to trace the population diversity and infection origin for the areas where the disease has not yet been detected or is still a problem.…”

“…One of the most prominent clinical features is intense pruritus, which develops mainly at the head and is followed by self-mutilation, severe skin abrasions and edematous reaction in the affected area [ 75 , 78 , 79 , 80 , 82 , 83 , 84 , 85 , 86 , 87 ] ( Figure 5 ). However, itching can be absent in animals suffering from AD [ 76 , 77 , 79 , 81 , 88 ]. Neurological impairment such as ataxia, tremor or head pressing is also reported [ 76 , 77 , 78 , 83 , 84 , 85 , 87 , 88 ].…”
