First isolation and whole genome characterization of porcine deltacoronavirus from pigs in Peru

Abstract: Porcine deltacoronavirus is a newly emergent enteric pathogen affecting swine farms worldwide. It has been detected in several countries in Europe, Asia and North America; yet, it has not been reported in South America. In November 2019, an enteric disease outbreak in a pig farm located in San Martin, Peru, was reported along with submission of three intestinal samples from pigs who succumbed to the disease. Samples were processed for molecular detection by qRT-PCR, viral isolation and further sequencing analy… Show more

“…A large-scale outbreak of unexplained diarrhea in sows and piglets in the United States in 2014 was later confirmed to be caused by PDCoV infection [ 2 ]. Subsequently, cases of PDCoV infection were detected in Canada [ 3 ], South Korea [ 4 ], China [ 5 ], Thailand [ 6 ], Laos [ 7 ], Vietnam [ 8 ], Japan [ 9 ], Mexico [ 10 ], and Peru [ 11 ], causing significant economic losses to the swine industry.…”

“…PDCoV was first reported in the feces of domestic pigs in Hong Kong, China in 2012 [ 17 ] but its association with pig diarrhea was not reported until 2014 in the U.S. and the virus rapidly spread to multiple states in the U.S. [ 18 , 19 ]. Subsequent to the U.S. introduction, PDCoV has since been detected in many other countries such as Canada, mainland China, Thailand, South Korea, Japan, Lao People’s Democratic Republic, Vietnam, Mexico, and Peru [ 20 , 21 , 22 , 23 ]. SADS-CoV was first detected in China in 2017 [ 24 , 25 , 26 ] and, in addition to the name SADS-CoV, other names such as porcine enteric alphacoronavirus (PEAV) and swine enteric alphacoronavirus (SeACoV) have also been used to describe this virus [ 24 , 25 ].…”
