First isolation and whole-genome sequencing of a Shewanella algae strain from a swine farm in Brazil

Abstract: Background Infections caused by Shewanella spp. have been increasingly reported worldwide. The advances in genomic sciences have enabled better understanding about the taxonomy and epidemiology of this agent. However, the scarcity of DNA sequencing data is still an obstacle for understanding the genus and its association with infections in humans and animals. Results In this study, we report the first isolation and whole-genome sequencing of a Shewanella algae strain from a swine farm in Brazil using the boot… Show more

“…Furthermore, other genera are related to environmental health, such as Terrabacter , initially isolated from soil mixed with pig hair from Spain ( 54 ) and considered of ecological importance for its involvement in biological phosphate removal from wastewater and bioremediation processes ( 55 ). However, other genera were considered detrimental microbes, such as Asteroleplasma and Intestimonas , opportunistic pathogens related to heat stress and gut inflammation in growing pigs ( 50 ), Candidatus saccharimonas , involved in chronic inflammation, or Shewanella and Morganella , considered unusual opportunistic pathogens ( 56 , 57 ).…”

“…Fecal samples were collected during voluntary fecal elimination into 50-mL sterile polypropylene centrifuge tubes without touching other surfaces to avoid cross-contamination. The pens were sampled using the boot sock method on the pen floor, as previously described 46 . Briefly, two layers of sterile disposable polypropylene shoe covers were worn over the researcher’s boot and dragged over the pen’s floor.…”
