“…To our knowledge, our case is the first one describing infective endocarditis caused by M. canariasense with life-threatening complications because of systemic embolization and valvular destruction requiring surgical valve replacement. It is likely that water used to dissolve the recreational drugs was contaminated with this pathogen and was the source of infection in our patient because M canariasense has been reported in water ( Azadi et al, 2014, Lecouna et al, 2016. Therefore, it is important to consider this organism in susceptible populations because the choice of antimicrobial, duration of therapy, and prognosis differ significantly compared with other infective etiologies manifesting similarly.…”

“…Because NTM are commonly found in water, especially in drinking-water distribution systems (24,(47)(48)(49)(50)(51)(52)(53) and tap water (54,55), municipal water supplies may be viewed as a potential source of infection. Colorado represents a unique geographic and hydrologic system where, to a large extent, we can separate the potential effect of source water from that of municipal water by using watersheds as a unit of exposure.…”

“…NTMs are usually ubiquitous in the environment and are opportunistic pathogens that can cause a wide range of infections, among which lung infections are the most common (70-80%). Unlike MTB, NTM can survive in municipal water supplies with poor nutrition, where they are able to form bio lms and are resistant to chlorinated disinfectants [1,2] . A series of nosocomial outbreak or pseudo-outbreaks studies have revealed that the presence of these NTMs in hospital water supply network served as main source, and contaminated medical equipment or solution caused healthcare-associated infections [3][4][5] .…”
