First record of the eucalyptus gall wasp, Leptocybe invasa Fisher and La Salle (Hymenoptera: Eulophidae), in Iraq

Abstract: A b s t r a c tThe eucalyptus gall wasp, Leptocybe invasa (Hymenoptera: Eulophidae), is a new genus and species recorded for the first time in Duhok city, Kurdistan region, Iraq. L. invasa makes galls on petioles, leaf midribs and young branches of Eucalyptus camaldulensis saplings and trees. This galling eventually can lead to heavily injured saplings. The average number of galls was 37.23 gall/branch, and major infestation was on leaf midribs with an average of 19.35 galls.

“…Heavy galling causes leaf and stem curling and bending, limiting further growth, and can lead to severe crop losses to eucalypts in tropical countries, such as Tanzania, Sri Lanka, and Vietnam . Since its identification in 2004, L. invasa has invaded and become established in Eucalyptus plantations worldwide, causing substantial economic and ecologic losses in Cambodia, Vietnam, Iraq, China, India, Uruguay, Tunisia, Mozambique, Morocco, Argentina, Mexico, the United States, Greece, France, Italy, and Portugal …”
