O mercúrio na Amazônia brasileira tem sido estudado devido à ocorrência de garimpo de ouro, que é uma atividade que aumenta a carga do mercúrio neste ecossistema. A forma mais tóxica deste elemento é o metil mercúrio, que é um potente neurotóxico com propriedade de atravessar a barreira placentária e afetar o desenvolvimento do feto com consequências irreversíveis para o recém-nascido.As populações ribeirinhas da Região Amazônica têm como principal fonte de proteína a ingestão de peixe, que dependendo do seu nível trófico podem constituir uma importante fonte de metil-mercúrio para estas populações. Embora atividades como o garimpo tenham diminuído nos últimos anos, os projetos de desenvolvimento, na região Amazônica, podem aumentar os níveis de Hg incorporados na cadeia trófica em forma de metil mercúrio. O presente trabalho tem como objetivo avaliar a exposição de Hg (matriz sangue e cabelo), na etapa de pré-enchimento do reservatório de uma hidrelétrica no rio Madeira, com foco principal na saúde infantil, em duas comunidades ribeirinhas, localizadas nas áreas de influência direta e indireta da usina hidrelétrica. A avalição da exposição ao mercúrio foi analisada junto a outras variáveis importantes, como as concentrações de Se no sangue, dieta, parâmetros bioquímicos, antropométricos e pressão arterial, com o intuito de gerar uma informação baseline para comparações futuras dos padrões de exposição após do estabelecime...

Mercury accumulation in bats near hydroelectric reservoirs in Peninsular Malaysia

In large man-made reservoirs such as those resulting from hydroelectric dam construction, bacteria transform the relatively harmless inorganic mercury naturally present in soil and the submerged plant matter into toxic methylmercury. Methylmercury then enters food webs and can accumulate in organisms at higher trophic levels. Bats feeding on insects emerging from aquatic systems can show accumulation of mercury consumed through their insect prey. In this study, we investigated whether the concentration of mercury in the fur of insectivorous bat species was significantly higher than that in the fur of frugivorous bat species, sampled near hydroelectric reservoirs in Peninsular Malaysia. Bats were sampled at Temenggor Lake and Kenyir Lake and fur samples from the most abundant genera of the two feeding guilds-insectivorous (Hipposideros and Rhinolophus) and frugivorous (Cynopterus and Megaerops) were collected for mercury analysis. We found significantly higher concentrations of total mercury in the fur of insectivorous bats. Mercury concentrations also differed significantly between insectivorous bats sampled at the two sites, with bats from Kenyir Lake, the younger reservoir, showing higher mercury concentrations, and between the insectivorous genera, with Hipposideros bats showing higher mercury concentrations. Ten bats (H. cf. larvatus) sampled at Kenyir Lake had mercury concentrations approaching or exceeding 10 mg/kg, which is the threshold at which detrimental effects occur in humans, bats and mice.

Abstract. High fish intake has marked the scenario of riparian communities in Amazon basin during the last three decades. Although efforts have been done by some national and international scientific groups to control mercury exposure in Brazilian Amazon, the problem persists. The return of artisan gold mining, the new hydroelectric power plants (with its reservoirs) and the expansion of the agribusiness are some of the economic activities that may contribute to the increment of mercury load in the Amazon ecosystem with direct influence in the food chain. These changes in Amazon scenario increase complexity of environmental issue and mercury may become a threat for susceptible exposure groups. This study evaluated mercury exposure scenarios for susceptible groups around the hydroelectric plant to calculate toxicological risk before damming. During the period of 2009 to 2011, about 771 children under 16 years age and 276 female in reproductive age (from 16 to 40 years old) were assessed. Besides, regular fish samples (n=1580) were collected for total mercury determination. The mercury concentration in fish ranged from 0.01 to 6.06 mg/kg. For the current scenario the toxicological risk ranged from 3.5 to 24 for mercury for the susceptible groups. Regarding the critical scenario after 3 years flooding, the area is expected to double the risk for the same group, especially for the communities downstream, which may represent a critical situation.
