Fish species from a micro‐tidal delta in the Caribbean Sea

Abstract: A total of 66 fish species belonging to 32 families were recorded between November 2012 and April 2014 in the southern arm of the delta to the Atrato River. Total length (LT ; range: 1·7-48 cm), total mass (MT ), LT and MT relationships (b values ranged from 1·8 to 3·7, mostly with negative allometric growth), and LT frequency (for 25 species) were estimated for freshwater, estuarine and marine species. LT and MT of Porichthys pauciradiatus and Membras argentea are given for the first time and maximum LT recor… Show more

“…Systems in the tropical Northwestern Atlantic have recently gained attention. Lists of species are available for the Atrato River Delta (Correa-Herrera et al, 2016 and Orinoco River Delta, on the Caribbean coast (Cervigón, 1985;Blaber, 2000;Blaber and Barletta, 2016) (Figure 1, Table 1). In the Atrato Delta, spatio-temporal patterns of fish larvae and their densities, comparable to microplastics available in the water, were also assessed (Correa-Herrera et al, 2017).…”

“…In the Colombian Caribbean there are very few antecedents of LWR studies in deep-water crustaceans, therefore, it is not possible to determine if there are variations of the parameter b and the type of growth of the species. However, in marine populations, variations in growth are related to factors such as ontogeny, feeding (quantity, quality and size), sex, state of maturity, health, seasonality, habitat, range of sizes and the sample size ( Keys, 1928 ; Le Cren, 1951 ; Safran, 1992 ; Moyle & Cech Jr, 2004 ; Froese, Tsikliras & Stergiou, 2011 ; Correa-Herrera, Jiménez-Segura & Barletta, 2016 ).…”

“…The Atrato River discharges into the western coast of the gulf and is the second‐largest freshwater input, after the Magdalena River, for the southern Caribbean (García‐Valencia, 2007). The estuary of the Atrato River Delta (ARD) is considered an essential aquatic habitat for biota and artisanal fisheries; nonetheless, information about fish is scarce (Correa‐Herrera et al ., 2016; Correa‐Herrera et al ., 2017; Sandoval et al ., 2020). There is a micro‐tidal regime with amplitude <40 cm.…”
