Five Year Incidence of Visual Field Loss in Adult Chinese. The Beijing Eye Study.

Abstract: PurposeTo describe the cumulative 5 year incidence of visual field loss in adult Chinese in Greater Beijing.MethodsThe Beijing Eye Study 2006 included 3251 subjects (mean age 60.4±10.1 years) who had participated in the Beijing Eye Study 2001 and returned for re-examination. All participants underwent a comprehensive eye examination, including visual field test by frequency doubling threshold perimetry. An abnormal visual field was defined as reduced sensitivity in at least one test location. Incident visual f… Show more

“…The details of participants and nonparticipants at baseline and the 5-year follow-up examination as well as the examinations performed have been described elsewhere. 15,16 All study participants underwent an interview by trained health staff with standardized questions on their family status, level of education, income, quality of life, psychic depression, physical activity, known major systemic diseases such as arterial hypertension and diabetes mellitus, and intake of systemic medication. Fasting blood samples were taken for measurement of blood lipids, glucose, and glycosylated hemoglobin HbA1c.…”

“…DR mainly causes vision loss and blindness in adults worldwide (Chong et al, 2017;Klein, 2007;Cheung et al, 2010). The incidence of DR has been increasing annually worldwide (Wang et al, 2012;Klein et al, 2017). Laser photocoagulation treatment shows no significant improvement in visual acuity in the long term (Liu et al, 2019).…”
