Flame Retardant Epoxy Resins containing Aromatic Poly(phosphonamides)

Abstract: As part of a program to develop more survivable aircraft, flame-retardant epoxy resins were investigated for their potential as fire-resistant exterior composite structures for future subsonic commercial and general aviation aircraft. Four different poly(phosphonamide)s were prepared by low temperature NMR condensation and characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, 1H-NMR spectroscopy, 31P-NMR, differential scanning calorimetry, viscometry and gel-permeation chromatography. The poly(phosphonamid… Show more

“…Epoxy resins have attracted much research interest as adhesives, coatings, composites, and insulants due to their good thermal and mechanical properties, excellent electrical properties, and good processability . With the development of the electronic industry, the epoxy resin with good heat resistance and low dielectric constant will play a more and more important role.…”

“…In recent years, halogen-free flame retardant (HFFR) has aroused great attention because of the evolution of corrosive and toxic gases during the combustion of halogen-containing flame-retardant materials. 812 Intumescent flame retardation (IFR) is one of the most promising HFFR because of the higher flame-retardant efficiency. Conventional IFR system is composed of three parts: an acid source such as APP, a carbonization agent such as pentaerythritol (PER), and a blowing agent such as melamine.…”

“…1,2 However, poor flame resistance is a significant disadvantage of common epoxy resins, which limits their applications in advanced materials. 3 Many studies have been conducted in developing high flame-retardant epoxy resins. [4][5][6] Halogenated monomers or additives show remarkable fire-retardant efficiency on epoxy resins, but they release a large amount of corrosive or poisonous smoke during combustion, which is greatly harmful to the environment and human health.…”
