Flame‐retardant rigid polyurethane foam with a phosphorus‐nitrogen single intumescent flame retardant

Abstract: A phosphorous-nitrogen intumescent flame-retardant, 2,2-diethyl-1,3-propanediol phosphoryl melamine (DPPM), was synthesized and characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and nuclear magnetic resonance. Flame-retardant rigid polyurethane foams (RPUFs) with DPPM (DPPM-RPUF) as fire-retardant additive were prepared. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) and mechanical performance testing showed that DPPM exhibited a favorable compatibility with RPUF and negligibly negative influence on the mechanical … Show more

“…Especially in dry conditions, this can lead to electrostatic discharge with sparks and shocks, which may result in instigating fires if this occurs in certain settings, such as a gasoline service station . Antistatic composites are 1 way to prevent fires, and fire retardants have also been used to improve the fire retardant nature of the flammable polymers …”

“…In recent years, intumescent flame‐retardant (IFR) systems have been considered to be a kind of environmentally friendly flame‐retardant additive and widely used as non‐halogen flame retardants with excellent flame‐retardant efficiency for POM. It is well‐known that an efficient running IFR system always include acid source as dehydrating agent, carbon source as char‐forming agent, and gas source as foaming agent . The intumescence mechanism consists in creating on the sample surface a foamed cellular charred layer, as protective barriers to reduce both the supporting gas and the heat flux from the flame to the polymer matrix, limiting the spread of fire.…”

“…The reactive flame retardants generally are the modified polyol with flame retardant chemical structure . And the addition flame retardants with no reaction groups cannot react with other component during the formation of RPUF, such as Al (OH) 3 , Mg (OH) 2 , expanded graphite (EG), and melamine . Comparing with the reactive flame retardant, the addition flame retardant is easier to prepare by physical methods and more cost‐favored.…”
