Flat supercontinuum generation pumped by amplified noise-like pulses from a figure-eight erbium-doped fiber laser

Abstract: The conditions to obtain noise-like pulses (NLPs) from a figure-eight fiber laser (F8L) and their application for supercontinuum (SC) generation in the anomalous dispersion regime are reported. The F8L is designed to remove the undesired low-intensity background radiation from pulse emission, generating NLPs with a 3-dB spectral bandwidth of 17.43 nm at the fundamental repetition frequency of 0.8 MHz. After amplification, NLPs reach a maximum average power of 9.2 mW and 123.32 nm spectral bandwidth. By control… Show more

“…In terms of performance, these numerical results are reasonably comparable with those previously published in [15] on SCG pumped by NLPs, in the SMF case. In general, the extension and profile of our numerical spectra are also quite similar to the experimental spectra reported in other works [18,55], using SMF as the nonlinear medium. It must be highlighted that moderate peak powers (~100 W) were used in these simulations to obtain such spectra using NLPs as a pump, an advantage over USPs that require peak powers as high as kW [9,22,41,42,47].…”

“…Noise-like pulses (NLPs) have attracted considerable attention due to potential applications in various fields, such as super-continuum generation [1], optical coherent tomography [2], nonlinear frequency conversion [3] and laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy [4]. Stemming from the interaction between linear and nonlinear processes, various mode-locking pulse behaviors can be observed in the cavity.…”

“…NLP has aroused intense research interests due to the characteristics of high energy, wide spectrum and low-coherence since it was reported by Horowitz et al for the first time in 1997 [17]. The NLP fiber laser has wide applications in the fields of optical sensors [18], supercontinuum generation [19,20] and optical coherence tomography [21]. In general, NLP has a nanosecond envelope and the interior of the envelope consists of a series of sub-picosecond secondary-pulses with random variations in terms of both intensity and width [17].…”
