Flavobacterium defluvii sp. nov., isolated from activated sludge

Abstract: A Gram-negative bacterium, designated strain EMB117 T , was isolated from a municipal wastewater treatment plant and characterized by polyphasic taxonomy. The cells were non-spore-forming rods that showed gliding motility. Optimal growth occurred at 25-30 6C and pH 7.0-8.0. Strain EMB117 T contained phosphatidylethanolamine as the predominant polar lipid, and the major fatty acids were iso-C 15 : 0 , iso-C 17 : 0 3-OH, iso-C 15 : 0 3-OH and summed feature 3 (C 16 : 1 v7c and/or iso-C 15 : 0 2-OH). The G+C cont… Show more

“…Activated-sludge processes have been used to remove organic compounds as well as nutrients from wastewater, and insight into the bacterial communities is a prerequisite for understanding activated-sludge processes. Therefore, efforts have been made in our laboratory to isolate and characterize members of the bacterial community in activated sludge (Jeon et al, 2003;Lu et al, 2006;Park et al, 2007;Ryu et al, 2007). In the present study, we describe a novel species of the genus Zoogloea isolated from an activated-sludge process treating domestic sewage.…”

“…Nitrate reduction was determined according to the method of Lányí (1987). Antibioticsensitivity tests were performed by using the diffusion method, as described by Park et al (2007), on NBTA and TYB agar at 30 uC with filter-paper discs (8 mm diameter; Sanofi Pasteur) containing the following antibiotics (in mg, unless otherwise indicated): streptomycin (10), penicillin G (10 IU), ampicillin (10), chloramphenicol (30), erythromycin (15), tetracycline (30), ofloxacin (5), amoxicillin (10), cefamezin (30), rifampicin (5), gentamicin (10), ceftazidime (30), vancomycin (30), kanamycin (30), carbenicillin (100) and polymyxin B (30). After 2 days incubation, the diameters of the inhibition zones were measured.…”

“…Species of the genus Flavobacterium are widely distributed in diverse environments, such as Antarctic lakes, soil, freshwater, seawater and wastewater treatment plants (McCammon & Bowman, 2000;Bernardet & Bowman, 2006; Kim et al, 2006;Park et al, 2007; Liu et al, 2008;Yoon et al, 2011;Zhang et al, 2010). At the time of writing, 121 species with validly published names are included in the genus Flavobacterium (http://www.bacterio.net/f/flavobacterium.…”
