Flexeo: An Architecture for Integrating Wireless Sensor Networks into the Internet of Things

Abstract: Abstract. Wireless sensor networks are a hot topic in Ubiquitous Computing for implementing context-awareness scenarios. The connection of sensor nodes to the Internet leads to new ways for remote monitoring of human behavior in real-time. In this paper, we introduce Flexeo: a flexible architecture for implementing monitoring solutions based on wireless sensor networks, with distributed intelligence at different layers. In this way, sensor-populated scenarios may communicate with Internet-based facilities enab… Show more

“…The city-wide context-data management system serves as a centralized information repository for the project. In the past, we have worked on developing platforms to manage the context (Dey 2001) in intelligent environments, (Almeida and López-deIpiña 2012a;Vazquez et al 2009;Almeida et al 2009) but limiting ourselves to a single home or building. In the case of City4Age, the created context-manager is able to simultaneously manage and integrate the information produced by several cities, while being flexible enough to allow each city to decide the level of abstraction of the data that they 1 3…”

“…[11] explains why OSGi is emerging as industry standard for control and coordinate the heterogeneous devices (sensors and actuators) dynamically deployed in any kind of environment. A few attempts have considered using OSGi, like FLEXEO [12], The Gator Tech Smart House [10], and SOCAM, all these approach following the general layered model. In our approach we combine OSGi framework with multi-agent system to build ubiquitous computing middleware.…”

“…Examples of middleware that exploit the agent-based paradigm for realizing sensor network architectures include Flexeo, an intelligent wireless sensor network [35], and Cognitive Office, a middleware for intelligent environments [10]. Both of them offer a decentralized approach to intelligence [11].…”
