Summary To minimize the emissions from the production of biofuels, one aim is to reduce or completely replace the amount of fossil fuels used for internal process energy. A conceivable solution is the use of volatile renewable energy sources such as solar and wind. The fluctuation of these energy sources in their production inevitably leads to a transformation to flexible power consumption, commonly referred to as demand side management (DSM). In current research, a wide range of processes has been identified to be suitable for DSM application. Although biorefineries have not yet been tested for DSM application, it is noteworthy that many of the DSM suitable processes are employed in biofuel plants. Thus, this contribution offers a comprehensive overview of DSM options drawn from literature with a special focus on process steps, which have been analysed for operational and capacity flexibility and which are found in or are transferable to biorefinery systems. By identifying process steps in biofuel production that can be operated flexibly, this extensive literature study helps to find technical restrictions limiting the overall process flexibility. The scope of this contribution is to create an overview of which processes in biofuel production can be considered for DSM use.

The participation of power-intensive chemical processes in demand response programs is seen to provide grid stability and potentially reduce the operating costs of these processes. Large-scale processes that require intermediate products that can be produced by demand response scheduling of a suitable preprocess are an option to be utilized as grid energy storage. In this light, we determine the demand response potential of the novel process route of the production process of ethylene oxide that is coupled to a polymer electrolyte membrane electrolysis process through process-specific analysis and scenario-dependent economic evaluation. We apply an innovative combination of mathematical tools in the consecutive steps of a demand-side management framework. The sequential approach is able to break down the complexity of the demand response operation of such processes into manageable subproblems. The case study illustrates the approach and proves its general validity in quantifying the potential application of large-scale processes in demand response programs.

Sweden’s goal of 100% renewable electricity generation by 2040 requires investments in intermittent electricity production (e.g. wind power). However, increasing the share of intermittent electricity production presents challenges, including reduced flexibility of electricity production. A strategy for overcoming this issue is developing flexibility in electricity consumption. This study analyses the potential for using flexible industrial processes, heat pumps (HP), and combined heat and power (CHP) plants in Swedish district heating systems to increase the share of wind power capacity without compromising grid stability. The simulation tool EnergyPLAN was used to assess the potential contribution of these strategies. The analysis includes a range of annual wind power production between 45 and 60 TWh. The required electricity imports and critical excess electricity (that can neither be used nor exported due to transmission line limitations) were used to evaluate the system’s stability. Managing the operation of CHP plants, HPs, and industrial processes in a flexible way is challenging, but these strategies may still play a decisive role in increasing the share of renewable electricity production and reducing demand peaks in cities. Whilst HP regulation is better at reducing excess electricity production at lower wind power capacities (from 32 to 15% for the analysed interval of wind power production), CHP regulation becomes more relevant when wind power capacity increases (from 14 to 39%). Like HP regulation, flexibility in electricity demand in industrial processes had a greater percentage contribution at lower wind power capacities. Combining HP, CHP regulation, and flexible electricity demands in industry can reduce excess electricity production by 68–80% and electricity imports by 14–26%. Wind power contributing to grid stabilisation reduces excess electricity production but does not reduce electricity imports.
