Flexible Transparent Heaters with Heating Films Made of Indium Tin Oxide Nanoparticles

Abstract: In this study, flexible transparent heaters with heating films made of indium tin oxide (ITO) are fabricated on plastic substrates. The optical transmittance of a representative flexible heater is above 90% in the visible and near infrared regions. The steady-state temperature is determined by the bias voltage and reaches about 180 degrees C at a bias voltage of 50 V. The heat-generating properties are nearly the same before and after the application of tensile strain. Furthermore, the defrosting ability is de… Show more

“…There are non-optoelectronic applications as well where transparent electrodes are required. In defogging or defrosting applications, a transparent electrode is joule heated to make the surface stand above the dew or frost point, respectively [5]. It is becoming fashionable to make conventional electronics transparent with the aid of transparent electrodes leading to transparent electronics, be it a gas sensor [6], H 2 catalyst [7], lithium ion battery [8], flexible capacitor [9], supercapacitor [10][11] or charge trap memory [12].…”

“…Heater materials that are optically transparent and electrically conductive, like graphene, 1,2 single-walled and multiwalled carbon nanotubes (SWCNT/MWCNT), 3−5 silver nanowires, 6 Ga-doped zinc oxide, 7 Cu wire networks, 8 and indium tin oxide (ITO), 9,10 have been studied recently. These materials are particularly intended to replace the incumbent ones, typically made of ITO, the price of which has doubled recently because of indium's scarcity and high demand.…”

“…For next‐generation, energy‐efficient smart buildings and automobiles, the development of multifunctional smart windows equipped with transparent information displays, electrochromic devices, and transparent window heaters is imperative . An increase in the proportion of outdoor transparent windows in recent buildings and automobiles has led to an increase in the importance of multifunctional smart windows.…”
