FlexRFID Middleware in the Supply Chain

Abstract: Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) has been used since the Second World War to identify “friend or foe” aircrafts. It has become an enabling wireless technology that is widely used in a number of application areas, such as product tracking through manufacturing and assembly, inventory control, and supply chain management (SCM). By 2006, Wal-Mart used RFID for all of its suppliers. The use of RFID in supply chain networks has allowed Wal-Mart to create value through greater visibility in its networks, higher… Show more

“…For its deployment, the analysis revealed the participation of SC and non-SC actors, both in bilateral relationships or through multi-actor platforms and networks. Regarding (S)SCM, the integration of enabling TfS technologies interconnects SC actors across traceability systems, incorporating TBL variables (Ajana, Harroud, Boulmalf, and Elkoutbi, 2011;Azevedo and Carvalho, 2012;Cannon et al, 2008;Marucheck et al, 2011).…”

“…The FlexRFID middleware in [10] serves getting data from the heterogeneous automatic identification devices and sensors, processing them, applying the business rules specified by the connected applications, and disseminating the processed data to the interested applications. Our middleware, that is, FlexRFID was tested with multiple application domains, such as smart library management [27], supply chain management [28], and healthcare scenarios [29].…”
