Fluid-Dynamic Investigations in a Scaled Cold Model for a Dual Fluidized Bed Biomass Steam Gasification Process: Solid Flux Measurements and Optimization of the Cyclone

Abstract: Gasification of biomass is an attractive technology for combined heat and power (CHP) production. A dual fluidized bed steam gasifier is in commercial operation at the biomass CHP plant in Guessing/Austria since 2002. For circulating fluidized bed applications the bed material consumption is economically crucial. Thus, cyclones for circulating fluidized beds need to be designed properly. Some erosion and caking in the cyclone of the gasifier could be observed with increasing hours of operation. The influences … Show more

“…where ρ bulk is the bulk density of the bed material (kg/m 3 ), h ref is the reference accumulating height (m) and τ ac is the time for the bed material to reach h ref (s). In addition to methods for mechanical valves, cutting off the fluidizing air in the loop seal abruptly can also achieve particle accumulation [13]. However, this method will disturb normal solid circulation in CFB loops and needs direct observation of the accumulation height, which is only possible with a transparent wall.…”

“…Therefore, the experimental verification of the scaling rules for fluidized bed biomass gasification reactors has some challenges. Kreuzeder et al used bronze particles with density about 8730 kg/m 3 and they had to rely on approximate results [39].…”

“…The cold flow models (CFMs) under ambient conditions are widely applied to study hydrodynamics and fluid dynamics for a new system. In addition, easy handling, minimal requirements on experimental equipment and control techniques, and the possibility of visual observation in the macroscopic flow structures make CFM a cheap, comfortable, and reliable way to obtain important fluid dynamic data . Many researchers have paid attention to the cold model for the advancement of the hydrodynamics of the fluidized bed including DFBs.…”
