Fluorinated Raspberry-like Polymer Particles for Superamphiphobic Coatings

Abstract: Raspberry-like (RB) polymer particles were prepared, fluorinated, and cast onto glass plates to yield highly water- and oil-repellant superamphiphobic particulate coatings. To procure the RB particles, glycidyl-bearing 212 and 332 nm particles (abbreviated as s-GMA and l-GMA, respectively) were first prepared via surfactant-free free radical emulsion polymerization. Reacting the glycidyl groups of the l-GMA particles with 2,2'-(ethylenedioxy)bis(ethylamine) (EDEA) produced large amine-functionalized particles … Show more

“…However, not only was hysteresis not reported but lower surface tension liquids were not tested and no durability experiments were performed. 14 Fluoropolymers have also been used with electrodeposited conductive polymers, 15 ZnO nanoparticles, 16 polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) trapezoids, 17 silica particles, 18 carbon nanofibers, 19 silicamodified fabrics, 20 raspberry-shaped particles, 21 and electrospun copolymers 22 to result in oleophobic or superoleophobic surfaces. Fluoropolymers have also been spray cast with fluorinated silica particles resulting in good repellency towards water, diiodomethane, rapeseed oil, and hexadecane.…”

“…Normally, the RB-like particles were synthesized by assembling numerous fine nanoparticles on the surface of big size core particles [11][12][13]. First report on the preparation of superhydrophobic coatings using RBlike particles was attempted by Ming and researchers in 2005 [14].…”

“…Currently, various technologies have been applied to fabricate superamphiphobic surfaces, such as chemical etching [7], chemical vapor deposition [8], electrospinning [9] and spraying [10]. Nevertheless, the real scale-up applications of the aforementioned coatings are scarce due to the unavoidable abrasion and corrosion in the presence of fluid with small solid particles or acidic/alkaline substances [11,12].…”
