Foam Sclerotherapy: Techniques and Uses

Abstract: Sclerosant foam has been increasing in use in recent times. It has certain advantages over liquid sclerosants and is quite safe to use, despite the fact that there are adverse events that have been reported. The history of sclerosant foam goes back in time many years. Tessari developed the current method of creating sclerosant foam in 2001, and his technique has been modified. In our experience, the sclerosant foam has totally replaced other methods of treating venous insufficiency, and the results of treatmen… Show more

“…Foam sclerotherapy is a variation of the method. With foam, air bubbles displace blood, allowing the agent to have more direct contact with the lesion's endothelium and exerting a greater effect than liquid alone (which is diluted in blood) . Subsequently, a lesser amount of active drug is necessary to treat the lesion successfully.…”

“…Importantly, FS seems to be especially useful in the patients who have difficulty tolerating multilayer compression bandaging or in patients who are not suitable for elevation leg therapy. 3,16,17 There is also the consideration that many patients with VLU may not be candidates for surgery on account of age and comorbidities or they do not agree to be operated on, even if no medical contraindications for such treatments exist. By comparison, most of these patients ideally qualify for FS of incompetent superficial and perforating veins.…”
