Abstract:Artificial spin ices are arrays of coupled single domain nanomagnets that have mainly been explored in two dimensions. They display a number of intriguing phenomena arising from the collective behavior of the magnets including vertex frustration, emergent magnetic monopoles, and phase transitions. Escaping this flat paradigm into the third dimension is now possible, thanks to advances in fabrication and characterization of three-dimensional mesoscopic magnetic systems, which have magnetic elements with dimensi… Show more

scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
