Objective: Identifying the nutritional status, dietary intake and diet quality of nursing mothers on exclusive breastfeeding. Methods: Cross-sectional study carried out with nursing mothers on exclusive breastfeeding from day 28 postpartum. Standardized instruments were used, and body mass index, food consumption and diet quality were evaluated. Results: The nursing mothers were overweight, presented energy consumption below the recommended and adequate percentage of macronutrients, except for protein, which was elevated. The diet was classified as "needs improvement" according to the Healthy Eating Index (HEI). Conclusion:The results show that the overweight associated with a diet of poor quality indicated possible deficiencies of micronutrients. ResumoObjetivo: Identificar o estado nutricional, o consumo alimentar e a qualidade da dieta de nutrizes em amamentação exclusiva. Métodos: Estudo transversal realizado com nutrizes em aleitamento exclusivo a partir do 28º dia pós-parto. Foram utilizados instrumentos padronizados e foram avaliados o índice de massa corporal, consumo alimentar e qualidade da dieta. Resultados: As nutrizes apresentaram sobrepeso, consumo energético abaixo do recomendado, porcentagens de macronutrientes adequadas exceto para proteína, que foi elevada. A dieta foi classificada como "precisando de melhorias", conforme o Índice de Alimentação Saudável. Conclusão: Os resultados mostraram que o sobrepeso associado a uma qualidade inadequada da dieta, indicou possíveis carências de micronutrientes.

Objective: To evaluate the effect of fibre intake on the evolution of maternal BMI from pregnancy to postpartum and to identify dietary patterns associated with fibre intake. Design: Cohort study. Food intake was obtained using an FFQ. Focused principal component analysis was used focusing on the variables: postpartum weight retention and total dietary fibre intake. Poisson regression models with robust variance were built in order to measure the effect of fibre intake during the postpartum period on obesity risk. Setting: Primary care clinics in southern Brazil. Subjects: Pregnant women (n 370) were followed until the 5th month postpartum. Results: The highest contribution to fibre intake came from the consumption of beans. Consumption of bread and rice indicated a common Brazilian food pattern along with beans. Participants retained a median of 4?4 (interquartile range 0?6, 7?9) kg of weight gained during pregnancy. Obesity risk, defined as an unfavourable evolution of BMI during pregnancy and postpartum, was present in 189 (55?1 %) women. Individual food items did not have an important effect on weight retention. In Poisson regression adjusting for maternal age, pre-pregnancy BMI and total gestational weight gain, inadequate postpartum fibre intake increased obesity risk by 24 % (relative risk 5 1?24; 95 % CI 1?05, 1?47). Conclusions: Important maternal weight retention occurred in these women. Adequate fibre intake may reduce obesity risk in the period following childbirth. Gestational weight gain above the recommendations of the Institute of Medicine (IOM) is considered the most important predictor for postpartum weight retention, increasing the short-, medium-and long-term risk obesity (3)(4)(5)(6)(7)(8) .Among other factors associated with postpartum weight variation, maternal age, parity, social and demographic factors as well as pre-pregnancy nutritional status represent non-modifiable factors or ones that occur before pregnancy (1,2) . Stability of Native Folate and Added Folic Acid in Micronutrient‐Fortified Corn Masa and Tortillas

Cereal Chem. 87(5):434-438Degradation of added folic acid and native folates in micronutrientfortified corn masa and tortillas was evaluated using masa prepared from either nixtamalized corn flour or fresh nixtamal. Variations in masa pH, masa holding time at an elevated temperature, and iron source failed to show significant differences in folate loss in corn flour masa prepared in the laboratory. Masa was subsequently prepared from fresh nixtamal in a commercial mill in Mexico, and fortified with one of two different micronutrient premixes containing iron, zinc, B-vitamins, and either unencapsulated or lipid-encapsulated folic acid. Folate loss in commercial masa increased significantly with prebake masa holding time for both premixes. Unencapsulated folic acid showed a 73% loss after 4 hr of holding, compared to 60% loss for encapsulated. The difference was statistically significant, indicating a protective effect from the lipid coating. No significant differences in folate levels were found between prebake masa and baked tortillas. Holding baked tortillas for up to 12 hr also had no effect on folate levels. Native folate showed no significant losses throughout the process. Results from the commercial tortilla mill indicate that most of the loss in added folic acid occurs during prebake holding of masa, possibly from microbial degradation.

Abstract: The energy and nutrient intakes of women were different by regional hospital and not by age. Education about the importance of the maternal diet during lactation should be directed toward increasing consumption of foods rich in micronutrients.
