Food hypersensitivity in 20 dogs with skin and gastrointestinal signs

Abstract: Canine food allergy can be defined as a nonseasonal, pruritic skin disorder of dogs that is associated with the ingestion of a substance found in the dog's diet. This study records the use of a proprietary dried fish, corn and soya-based diet for the investigation and maintenance of food allergic dogs when fed initially as a restricted allergen diet and then as a maintenance diet after challenge. All the dogs showed evidence of pruritic skin disease and in addition demonstrated gastrointestinal signs. These in… Show more

“…In addition, the clinical scoring was lower in the dietary treatment group. The younger age in the dietary treatment group points towards possible food intolerance or food allergy in these animals, as such diseases occur more frequently in young dogs (Jergens et al, 1992;Guilford, 1994;Paterson, 1995). It is also possible P-glycoprotein in Canine Chronic Enteropathies that dogs with severe disease at the time of first diagnosis were particularly likely to be switched to steroid treatment after one week of diet treatment, as further clinical deterioration could not be permitted.…”

“…Clinical symptoms of food allergy overlap with those of CAD (Chesney 2002, Loeffler et al 2006. IDST or allergen-specific IgE test is neither sensitive nor specific enough to diagnose food allergy (Paterson 1995, Jeffers et al 1996, Ishida et al 2004, Olivry et al 2007). One of the reasons for this is that food allergy occurs through the combined mechanisms of IgE-mediated (type I) and non-IgE-mediated allergic reactions.…”

“…Intradermal testing examines in vivo reactions mediated by the interaction between an allergen and antigen-specific IgE on mast cells in the skin; however, the test has proved unsuccessful for the identification of food allergens in dogs with FA [9,10,24]. Serum IgE tests that detect IgE against food allergens have also been found inappropriate because of their low sensitivity in detecting reactive allergens that were identified during food elimination and provocation [9,10].…”
