Food Webs

Abstract: Ciliates are important elements of the trophic networks of aquatic and terrestrial environments, they can be primary producers (myxotrophs), consumers of bacteria, algae, flagellates, even other ciliates and can serve as food for metazoans, for all the above they are the link between different levels of food webs. The structure of the ciliates varies according to the seasons of the year and depending on the trophic conditions of the aquatic systems. Ciliated communities have modifications and adaptations in re… Show more

“…Mixotrophy is the occurrence of phagotrophy and phototrophy in the same organism. A phagotroph consumes phototrophs, such as flagellates, and leaves them intact, thus deriving organic matter from them [72,73]. Although most ciliates are heterotrophic, many species are mixotrophic [74].…”

“…The canonical biplot analysis (Figure 4) shows that environmental factors (physical and chemical) had a greater influence on the abundance and composition of phytoplankton in the three salt ponds than predatory factors or zooplankton. Although Brebes and Sampang salt ponds are characterized by the dominance of Didinium sp., a carnivorous zooplankton type, Tuban salt ponds are characterized by Tintinnopsis sp., which has tendencies as an herbivore (Camarillo and Zaragoza 2021). It is widely known that zooplankton as a predator impacts plankton composition.…”

“…A commonly identified effect of eutrophication is 'biotic homogenization'. This term refers to an increase in the repeatability of species composition in different places or samples and is determined quantitatively by means of a dissimilarity index [12,13].…”
